I was thrilled to be able to illustrate four limited edition postage stamps for the Swiss Post, which were available at all Swiss post offices. When I learned that the theme was "Animals in the City," I decided to take a short brainstorming trip with my camera and sketchbook to the nearby cities of Solothurn and Olten.
I considered where I might encounter these animals and where they would feel comfortable. It was a challenge to design an appealing and meaningful composition for such a small end format as a postage stamp.
After the design phase, the concept was set: The fox roams through the lush green area of the vocational school in Solothurn. The wood mouse peeks out of a gutter onto the activities in Olten's old town. The mole peers from his hill onto one of the lawns around the Solothurn Art Museum, and the stoat briefly stops on a wildly overgrown wall on the outskirts of Olten.
Although the end format had to be the size of a postage stamp, the submission format was A4, which invited attention to details, such as the individual whiskers of the mole.
Especially the mole initially gave me some concerns because often it's the eyes that make creatures look expressive, lively, and sometimes even cute. I therefore put a lot of work into the fine fur, the small wet snout, and the unusual digging shovels. This guy developed into my personal favorite of the series.
For this reason, I also illustrated the mole once again for the motif of the first-day cover (FDC), this time with the Solothurn St. Ursen Cathedral in the background. I was also allowed to design the matching stamp.

Mit grosser Freude durfte ich 4 Briefmarken für die Schweizerische Post illustrieren, die ab dieser Woche in allen Schweizer Poststellen erhältlich sind. Als ich das Thema "Tiere in der Stadt" erfuhr entschied ich mich nach einem kurzen Brainstorming mit Kamera und Skizzenbuch in die nahe gelegenen Städte Solothurn und Olten zu fahren.
Ich überlegte mir wo ich diese Tiere antreffen könnte und wo sie sich wohlfühlen würden. Es war eine Herausforderung, eine ansprechende und sinnvolle Komposition für ein solch kleines Endformat wie eine Briefmarke zu entwerfen.
Nach der Entwurfsphase stand das Konzept fest: Der Fuchs zieht durch das üppig begrünte Areal der Berufsfachschule Solothurn. Die Waldmaus schaut aus einer Dachrinne auf das Geschehen der Altstadt von Olten. Der Maulwurf späht von seinem Hügel auf eine der Rasenflächen rund um das Kunstmuseum Solothurn und das Hermelin macht kurz halt auf einer wildbewachsenen Mauer am Stadtrand von Olten. Obwohl das Endformat natürlich die Grösse einer Briefmarke haben musste, war das Abgabeformat A4, welches dazu einlud sich auch mit den Details, wie den einzelnen Barthaaren des Maulwurfs zu beschäftigen.
Gerade der Maulwurf machte mir zu Beginn etwas Sorgen denn oft sind es ja die Augen welche Lebewesen, ausdrucksstark, lebendig und manchmal auch putzig aussehen lassen. Ich steckte deshalb besonders viel Arbeit in das feine Fell, die kleine nasse Schnauze sowie die aussergewöhnlichen Grabschaufeln. So entwickelte sich der Kerl zu meinem persönlichen Liebling der Serie. Aus diesem Grund habe ich auch den Maulwurf für das
Motiv des Ersttagsumschlags (FDC, abk. von First Day Cover) nochmals illustriert. Dieses Mal mit der solothurnischen St. Ursenkathedrale im Hintergrund. Zusätzlich durfte ich auch den dazu passenden Stempel designen.
